Is Arizona Going to Reduce the Annual Medical Marijuana Card Fee?
(Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Medical Marijuana, Mexico, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, United States, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Dispensaries) Medical marijuana card fees vary significantly by state with Arizona having one of the highest in the country. The state reports having nearly 190,000 patients, many of which struggle to afford the state’s $150 annual fee (plus another $100-$150 for an annual state-required medical marijuana doctor certification ), leaving them unable to renew every year. The Arizona Medical Marijuana Act allows the state to charge a fee that covers the cost of operating the state’s medical marijuana program. Currently, there is a surplus of tens of millions of dollars from the program’s fees imposed on patients and dispensaries . The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), if they decided to, could simply decrease the annual fee to a more reasonable amount; for example, $30 – an amount that will still produce sufficient revenue ($5.7 million produced annually from 190,000 patients) for the state while not putting an unnecessary financial burden on the state’s citizens seeking alternative...

(Alaska, Canada, Cannabis, Colorado, Growing, Israel, Legalization, Management, Medical Marijuana, News, Oregon, Recreational, Research, Science, Scientific Research, United States, Washington, Recreational Cannabis, Funding) Medical Marijuana Studies are Booming The proof is in the pudding, or so they say. But if you’d like the truth about cannabis, just look at the growing body of research. From the years 2000-2017, there’s been over 29,000 studies focused on cannabis alone, according to a recent research review that’s been published in Population Health Management. The review, conducted by a research team in Israel, revealed that the spike in cannabis research surged dramatically within that time frame. To conduct the review, they looked at online research databases including Web of Science and PubMed. There was an especially large spike starting in 2013, but what was interesting was that the jump in cannabis research outperformed all other areas of scientific research when you look at the big picture. Annually, all other scientific publications jumped up 2.5 times from 2000-2017 (from 531,664 to 1,282,220); meanwhile, cannabis-focused studies increased 4.5 times (from 620 to 2,388). Not convinced yet? Read our full book review or enjoy this interview that was recorded on a sizzling hot summer day in the Botanic Gardens in Amsterdam. What are the three most important things in your life? I think definitely my children and probably Buddhism and everything that it has brought me and connected to that the trekking I used to do in the Himalayas. I loved that very much. How did you remember all the details over the years? I had a wonderful little diary from 68 to 72 and it was just a little book and that helped me a lot. Alas I have lost the diary since then but what information from those days came from there. And my children always tell me what I tell wrong. They say “that wasn’t then!” and “you don’t remember she was there?” and I have to think … oh yeah. How long did it take you to write the book? Eleven years. I started a long time ago. Then I wrote for...

Court Expands Federal Equal Pay Act: Look Out Marijuana Businesses!
(Alaska, Arizona, California, Cannabis, Compliance, Education, Growing, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Recreational, United States, Washington, Recreational Cannabis) Equal pay is not only the right thing to do, it’s required by the law. Equal pay legislation is sweeping the country. Oregon, Washington , and California all have equal pay legislation on the books that directly affects cannabis businesses. These equal pay laws require employers to pay employees the same amount for substantially similar work and prohibit employers from basing salaries on employee’s sex. Oregon and California’s laws, in specific, prohibit employers from asking applicants about their past salaries. With the cannabis industry growing so quickly , it is only a matter of time before employers start tripping on these new laws. Following the trend of these state laws, a recent 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision similarly expanded the federal Equal Pay Act to prohibit employers from basing an employee’s pay on past salaries and likely prohibit employers from asking about past salaries. This decision applies to businesses, included, licensed cannabis businesses, in...

State medical marijuana laws and their implementation are safe until September 30th of this year. In a highly anticipated move, Congress extended the protections of the well-known “Rohrabacher-Blumenauer Amendment” (the “Amendment”) last week. This extension is an important political and legal action after Attorney General Jeff Sessions threw the state-legal cannabis industry into a fit from his rescinding of the Obama era Cole Memo in January (he has provided further, largely unhelpful guidance since then). But what impact does the Amendment really have? It could be significant over the coming months, though I am confident that Sessions and other U.S. Attorneys may seek to undermine the spirit of that law as time goes on. The Amendment first passed back in 2014 and has been consistently renewed and extended by Congress in the form of budget riders since then (and this last one is around 2,200 pages ). The Amendment has been construed...

Cannabis for Dogs? A Look Behind The CBD Pet Treat Trend
(Alaska, Cannabis, CBD, Growing, Oils, Pets, Science, United States, Extracts) Dosing pets with CBD is an emerging trend among pet owners in Alaska, say a growing group of businesses that sell it for veterinary use. A number of Alaska businesses are now making and selling CBD pet treats, extracts and oils. Though some pet owners swear by it, the science supporting their success stories is thin. And regulation of CBD — a product used by humans, too — is virtually nonexistent. At AK Bark, an Anchorage pet shop, owner Mark Robokoff said that sales took off after he started selling CBD 18 months ago. CBD products now make up 50 percent of his shop's gross revenue.Robokoff says he's heard from hundreds of pet owners who have seen old arthritic dogs walk more easily, anxiety-ridden animals staying calm under stress, and a huge reduction in seizures in animals that suffer from epilepsy. Vermont Legalizes Cannabis!
(Alaska, California, Cannabis, Colorado, Extraction, Kentucky, Legalization, Maine, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oils, Oregon, Recreational, United States, Vermont, Washington, Washington DC, Recreational Cannabis, Cultivation) Congratulations to defiant Vermont! Yesterday, Vermont Governor Phill Scott signed a bill into law legalizing marijuana. Vermont has become the first state to legalize recreational marijuana through its legislature.
