Too many to count. But surely one of the oddest was always going to be the reacceptance and relegalization of cannabis in China. The path so far has been, at a minimum, tortured. Ritualistic, religious, and medical use of cannabis is mentioned in Chinese texts as early as 3,000 years B.C. and medical literature for the last 2,000 years . Fast forward through Imperial dynasties, the western Age of Empire and exploitation, a cultural and political revolution and two world wars, and it took China until 1985 to actually declare cannabis “illegal.” During the 19th Century British occupation, the majority Muslim Xinjang region of the country was a major cannabis producer (and exporter) to British India .This was done legally and under tariff until 1934 when the communist government cut off legal trade. Currently, punishment for possession yields10-15 days jail time and a 2,000-yuan (approximately $300) fine. Illegal...

Marijuana could treat chronic pain better than opioids
(Cannabis, Growing, Illinois, Medical Marijuana, News, Science, Synthetic, United States, Vietnam) In 2016, over 64,000 people in the United States died from opioid overdoses — either from painkillers, heroin, or fentanyl (a synthetic opioid). To put that number in perspective, that’s more Americans killed by opioids in 365 days than were killed during the entirety of the Vietnam War. Opioids in America are more than a crisis — they’re a national emergency. While doctors may have helped fuel this epidemic through the over-prescription of opioids, the underlying issue that they were often trying to treat, chronic pain, remains an enormous issue. Americans, pain pills or not, are hurting. In a recent National Institutes of Health study, 25.3 million adults reported experiencing chronic pain every single day in the three months prior to the study, a number that makes up 11.2 percent of the population. An even larger number, 126 million people, reported experiencing pain of some sort in the three months prior. Doctors have long voiced concerns that prescription opioid painkillers — on...

Veterans Are Key To Surge Of States Approving Medical Pot For PTSD
(Afghanistan, Alaska, California, Cannabis, District of Columbia, Georgia, Growing, Iraq, Legalization, Medical Marijuana, Mexico, New Mexico, New York, News, Oils, Research, Science, Scientific Research, Synthetic, Testing, United States, Vietnam, Virginia) NEW YORK (AP) — It was a telling setting for a decision on whether post-traumatic stress disorder patients could use medical marijuana. Against the backdrop of the nation’s largest Veterans Day parade, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced this month he’d sign legislation making New York the latest in a fast-rising tide of states to OK therapeutic pot as a PTSD treatment, though it’s illegal under federal law and doesn’t boast extensive, conclusive medical research. Twenty-eight states plus the District of Columbia now include PTSD in their medical marijuana programs, a tally that has more than doubled in the last two years, according to data compiled by the pro-legalization Marijuana Policy Project. A 29th state, Alaska, doesn’t incorporate PTSD in its medical marijuana program but allows everyone over 20 to buy pot legally. The increase has come amid increasingly visible advocacy from veterans’ groups . A jar of marijuana is seen on a vendor table at the Cannabis Crown 2010 expo...

Medical Marijuana Study for PTSD Approved in Arizona
(Afghanistan, Arizona, Cannabis, CBD, Food, Iraq, Medical Marijuana, Oils, Strains, Synthetic, United States, Vietnam, THC) Both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have approved a study regarding the effectiveness of medical marijuana for veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). Applications for participants to join the study will be accepted soon. The study will take place in North Phoenix and will include 38 veterans with documented PTSD. Approval of these studies mark the first ever approved by both the FDA and DEA for the marijuana flower rather than marijuana oils or synthetic options, according to AZ Central . The goal of the study is to prove that medical marijuana helps treat PTSD. If the study does prove an improvement in symptoms, a push for FDA approval of medical marijuana for all veterans will begin. The percentages of veterans with documented PTSD are: 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans 12 percent of Gulf War veterans 11 to 20 percent of Iraq/Afghanistan War veterans The principal investigator for this study is Dr. Sue Sisley, who said...

How Cannabis May Be Used As a Weapon of War
(Cannabis, Cigarettes, Events, Growing, India, Liberia, Management, Production, Research, Science, Sierra Leone, Vietnam) Most of us see cannabis as a peaceful substance, one that will relax and calm the user and increase feelings of social bonding and togetherness within a community. So why is it that throughout history, reports of cannabis being used as a weapon of war are so common? From the Assassin sect of ancient Persia, all the way to modern-day African warlords who ply their child soldiers with cannabis, there are dozens of accounts of the famously pacifistic herb being used as a means to facilitate warfare. Cannabis Use in Warfare Throughout History Over the thousands of years that cannabis has been a companion to humanity, it has served countless purposes. It is a religious sacrament to many, a healing plant to countless more – and perhaps most of all, it is a mild, soothing recreational drug that causes relaxation and social bonding. So why are there so many examples, from ancient history right up to the present day, of cannabis being used as a means to facilitate warfare? In Companion to the...

Connect to Textile Artisan
(Hemp, Products, Vietnam, Cultivation) We meet textile artisan Mùa Y Mế in this, the last short film in the Shan Tea story strand (although look out for a special feature on Fin Ho tea coming soon). Mế's journey has taken her from doing low income slash and burn cultivation and selling odds and ends to learning new textile making skills, working on new designs and now working in a women's textiles group and increasing her income by selling higher quality products. The empowerment Mế and other women get from the groups has also changed their domestic lives as working in the homestead based groups means they no longer have to split their time between there and doing arduous and dangerous work high in the mountains just to make ends meet. Chris Weigant: Friday Talking Points -- Don't Panic!
(California, Cannabis, Colorado, Florida, Media, Medical Marijuana, Michigan, Nevada, News, Pennsylvania, United States, Vietnam, Washington) Can we all just take a deep breath? I'm speaking to many Democratic voters as well as the bulk of the mainstream media here, just to clarify. Because far too many seem to currently be going off the deep end. But from where I sit, this is an overreaction to a very short-term situation. Cannabis and Street Art
(Cannabis, Deals, Magazines, Media, New York, United States, Vietnam, Recreational Cannabis) There are many links between the world of cannabis and the world of street art. Some are so obvious that they really don’t need an explanation; others are more subtle, and perhaps even more interesting to explore. Staying high with STAYHIGH 149 Wayne Roberts became one of the most famous and influential graffiti writers to emerge from the fertile street-art breeding ground that was 1970s New York. Working as a Wall Street messenger, in the days before internet which required urgent papers and communications to be ferried by hand, Roberts spent his days riding the sprawling subway system where he was inspired by seminal writers PRAY, TAKI 183 and JOE 182. Roberts didn’t have to spend time pondering his own name . Since 1969 he had been nicknamed “Stayhigh” , due to his daily consumption of around 28 grams of cannabis. In 1971 the nickname became his tag, and the following year he added his street number (following the tradition of the emerging writers) and STAYHIGH 149 was born. The...

(ASX:PLY, Australia, Canada, Cannabis, Cannabis and Hemp, Celebrities, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Growing, Hemp, Indonesia, Malaysia, Medical Marijuana, Netherlands, Peru, Phytotech Medical Limited, Production, Products, Research, Singapore, United States, Vietnam, Cultivation) Australia seems set to legalise cannabis cultivation for medical purposes throughout the country.
