The global legal medical cannabis market alone could be worth more than $50bn by 2025. The dizzying numbers surrounding Canada’s ‘green rush’ has triggered interest across Asia as hardliners soften their attitudes towards cannabis use, incentivized by the potential economic impact of legalizing the weed in their countries. Here is some of what’s happening in Asia; SRI LANKA Sri Lanka will begin cultivating cannabis for medical purposes later this year. Burying the Dead: Extrajudicial Killings in the Philippines and the Catholic Church's Response
(Monitoring, Philippines) January 25, 2018 DePaul University Speaker: Rev. Amado Picardal, CSsR Police and death squads in the Philippines have murdered over 10,000 people in the 18 months of President Rodrigo Duterte's War on Drugs. Suspected of being addicts and pushers, the majority of victims are among the nation's poorest citizens. The Catholic Church is responding by helping bury the dead, providing economic and psychosocial assistance to victims' families, and establishing community-based rehab programs. It is also exercising a prophetic role, monitoring and denouncing human rights violations and extending sanctuary to witnesses. This presentation is the third in CWCIT's lecture series on the Corporal Works of Mercy. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Rev. Amado Picardal, CSsR, is a Filipino Catholic priest and member of the Redemptorist Congregation. A human rights and peace advocate, he's based in Davao, where he first began to speak out against the extrajudicial killings carried out there when Rodrigo Duterte was...

Trump comments at Camp David
(Legalization, News, Philippines) He talks about "other countries" and how they deal with drug policy. Starts at the 1:05 mark in the CNN video One leader that Trump has expressed admiration for in the past is Duterte in the Philippines that allegedly has death squads that perform extrajudicial killings of suspected drug dealers. With this and the recent Sessions comments on MJ are we about to see a complete 180 on policy? Raids, seizures, harsh sentences? That will make the news- even on Fox. There is no way that states like CO, CA and NV are giving up those tax $ and jobs without a fight. Could be great for us- massive declines in US MJ stock prices while the new drug war is waged. I believe its inevitable that the US goes legal federally eventually and my personal plan is to take my gains from legalization in CAD stocks and flip it into the US markets when that ball really starts to roll. submitted by /u/chadt5382 [link] [comments]

Philippines President Vows to Murder Drug Dealers, Users
(Philippines) Rodrigo Duterte, the recently-elected president of the Philippines, delivered his State of the Nation Address, and in it he vowed to show “no mercy” in his violent war on drugs and crime as he warned criminals that human rights advocates and priests cannot protect them from being murdered. Duterte was elected in June, after promising to stop crime and corruption throughout the country by killing anyone who uses or sells drugs, reports Drug Policy Alliance . Duterte has even encouraged law enforcement officers, and civilians, to kill drug addicts and anyone suspected of selling drugs. He said, “If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful.” “I strongly suspect that Filipinos will come to regret their election of a president who expresses such contempt for basic principles of due process and human rights,’ said the Executive Director of the Drug Policy Alliance. “A government that condones extra-judicial killings of...

Should Philippines Legalize Marijuana As A Cure?
(Cannabis, Colorado, Medical Marijuana, Philippines) PHILIPPINES: The recent legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado has revived debates on whether to allow the use of the substance for medicinal purposes . While those pushing for its legalization claim that marijuana can provide relief to patients who have tried in vain to seek cure from conventional treatments, some are worried about its impact on public safety . Malacañang has yet to issue a categorical statement on whether it will back the legalization of marijuana, preferring instead to leave the matter to Congress. Some lawmakers have bared plans to file a bill legalizing medical marijuana , but it remains uncertain whether it will gain widespread support. Iligan City Rep. Vincent Belmonte, chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Dangerous Drugs, has said that the benefits of medical cannabis “should outweigh the risks from potential abuse.”
